BBM 74, based in Neuchâtel, is a multi-instrumental music school renowned for its specialisation in teaching POP Music. Using an innovative immersive method (‘you come, you play’), the school stands out for its unique approach, which attracts a large multi-generational community. It has 300 active students from its various activities. Vincent Villard, the founder, is a professional musician and entrepreneur with undeniable charisma. Through a number of music-related initiatives, he embodies the vision of BBM 74.

Challenge

With the rise of digital technology and the implications of COVID-19, online music education has developed at an accelerated pace. In addition, music streaming platforms, social networks and new forms of online performance such as ‘Tiny Concert’ and ‘Pop/Dust’ dominate the musical landscape.

Desired state

For BBM 74: The school aspires to financial autonomy and to modernising its offerings in line with current trends, while preserving its identity. Digitalisation is seen as an opportunity, as is the optimisation of its sources of income.

Although the investment required is significant, it is not unrealistic, and will require close collaboration with the school's teachers, perhaps envisaging a participatory remuneration system.

The provision of a catalogue of scores to other schools could be envisaged in the very near future. In addition, extending the current offer to existing music groups, from the ‘learn & play’ model to the ‘play & perform’ model, would appear to be a profitable option in the short term.
